PRESS CLEANING TECHNOLOGIES
Impact Global and Impact Flex
Impact® Global and Impact Flex systems offer the flexibility of using the unique pre-impregnated Prepac® or a dry cloth with separate cleaning agent. The environmentally-friendly Prepac cloth is impregnated with the exact amount of low VOC cleaning agent required to clean the blanket, which removes the need to store or handle solvents in the press room. The Impact system cleans blankets in the most environmentally friendly and efficient way. It is easy to install and requires very low maintenance, making it highly attractive to modern newspaper and semi-commercial press operations.
Oxy-Dry Rotary Brush
The Baldwin Oxy-Dry blanket cleaning system uses a unique self-cleaning brush technology to wash blankets. This system offers the ideal solution for customers who want to achieve a high wash quality with the minimum amount of waste and low consumption of solvent and water. One of the most important trends in newspaper printing is the growth in semi-commercial presses and the integration of dryers into newspaper presses requires a blanket wash system that minimizes the time that the paper is exposed to washing.
Tower Clean
Tower Clean is a blanket cleaning system for single width presses that automates cleaning, increases press productivity and improves print quality. The equipment consists of a solvent applicator per tower, brush units and pumping station. Tower Clean enables the blanket to be cleaned by contact with the moving web once the small profile applicator has applied a low VOC solvent to the paper.
As the web reaches the blanket the brush unit, which is frequently installed only on the first-down blanket, is activated. This removes lint and ink. In addition, the Tower Clean process has a positive cleaning effect on the guide rollers. Tower Clean can easily be retrofitted to existing presses where newspapers are looking to eliminate manual blanket cleaning.
Jetstream
Technology that enables debris to be removed from the web before it enters the press is rapidly being taken up by the industry. Baldwin’s Jetstream system is a revolutionary approach to this challenge and results in improved print quality, productivity and profitability. Some newspaper printers operating Jetstream report being able to print millions of impressions before a blanket clean is required on the press. Combining Jetstream with one of Baldwin’s blanket cleaning technologies allows the printer to produce long runs with high quality from the first to the last print.
Baldwin offers, on all of its cleaning systems, a full or partial integration into the central control console, as well as stand-alone solutions for both new installations and retrofits, guaranteeing easy operation.
SPRAY DAMPENING TECHNOLOGIES
Litho Spray Maxima and World Spray Dampening
Baldwin’s Litho Spray Maxima unit is the first spray dampening system that has been designed for both heatset commercial and high performance newspaper printing applications. Maxima incorporates as standard Baldwin’s maintenance-friendly Constant C air curtain technology and has a range of control and valve speed options. The Maxima system offers proprietary control algorithms, which makes it an ideal partner technology for faster pre-setting of ink and water. The valves and nozzles within a spray dampening system have to provide consistent dampening at all times. Constant C technology can also be supplied with, or retrofitted to, existing World or Optima spray bars.
The S16 control card technology integrated in the Maxima system makes it possible to receive feedback on valve functions, pressure and temperatures to ensure that the exact amount of water is applied where and when required. This reduces fountain solution and ink usage as well as paper waste at start-up. The S16 control card is fully compatible with most existing printing control systems but, if required, Maxima can be delivered with a separate, operator friendly interface.
Constant C
Baldwin’s unique Constant C (patent pending) technology eliminates the problem of plugged or blocked nozzles on spray dampening systems by providing an air curtain around the nozzle tips, which keeps ink mist and debris away. With this feature nozzles perform at the same high quality level at all times.
U-59 Seal Technology
Baldwin’s valve and nozzle assemblies now incorporate the use of U-59, a stable sealing material that withstands ink and blanket wash chemistry, thus making it possible to operate the spray dampening system in a closed loop environment with dampening solution recovery. This allows a precision never seen before in spray dampening systems, resulting in more effective dampening and less environmental impact.
FILTRATION TECHNOLOGY
Long Life Filtration
Baldwin’s long life filtration cleaning management unit (LCM) and long life filtration cleaning and disposal management unit (LCDM) are unique in their ability to maintain fountain solution effectiveness. The LCM unit can be connected to fountain solution systems for web and newspaper presses and is designed to free completely the contaminated dampening solution of residue ink and paper waste, organic impurities and detergent elements. The dampening solution is then fed automatically back into the circuit.
Baldwin’s LCDM unit removes used solution from the cooling unit and filters it through a specially designed cross-flow-membrane, which extracts impurities without affecting the IPA or IPA substitute values. Cleaned fountain solution is fed back into the cooling system and the concentrated waste from the filtration is treated with a special additive, resulting in an easily disposable solid waste.
In addition to the products above, Baldwin will launch a new ink train cleaning unit at IFRA, while visitors can also hear about the company’s web catchers, circulators, cooling systems, guide roller cleaners, fold gluing and web softening systems.
